Jesus observed people giving offerings at the temple. The wealthy gave large amounts, but a poor widow gave two small coins (mites), all she had. Jesus told His disciples that while others gave from their surplus, the widow's small offering was greater because she gave out of her poverty, giving everything she had to live on.
